Der 1969 als “Kulturpark Plänterwald” eröffnete und von 1989 bis 2020 unter dem Namen “Spreepark Berlin” betriebene Freizeitpark soll zu einem Kulturzentrum umgebaut werden.
Das Areal liegt seit seiner Schließung im Jahr 2002, also seit nunmehr 19 Jahren, brach. Dennoch ist es bei Berlinern und Touristen ein beliebtes Reiseziel geblieben. Als einer von mehreren “Lost Places” in der Metropolregion Berlin/Brandenburg hat das verlassene und verfallene Areal mittlerweile selbst internationale Berühmtheit erlangt.
Seit 19 Jahren liegt das Gelände brach
Nun soll das Areal aber neu entwickelt werden. Wer nun erwartet, dass auf der Fläche Sport- und Freizeitflächen oder die so bitter benötigten Wohnflächen entstehen, irrt. Der Park soll auch zukünftig bestehen, nur in veränderter Form.
Aus dem zugewachsenen und verwitterten Parkgelände soll ein Kulturzentrum werden. Einige Fahrgeschäfte wie das alte Riesenrad sollen saniert und künstlerisch gestaltet werden. Andere Relikte wie die Mero- oder die Werkhalle sollen sich zu Veranstaltungsorten für Kultur und Kunst wandeln.
Auf dem Parkgelände soll ein Natur- und Kulturzentrum entwickelt werden
Das kommunale Unternehmen Grün Berlin GmbH verantwortet die Entwicklung des Projekts. Das Unternehmen ist seit 25 Jahren Partnerunternehmen des Berliner Senats und setzt klimaneutrale Park-, Infrastruktur- und Stadtraumprojekte um.
Das Projekt “Spreepark” ist eines dieser Projekte. Unter dem Motto “Kunst – Kultur – Natur” soll das Areal bis 2026 neu entwickelt und modernisiert werden. Finanzielle Unterstützung dafür kommt nun vom Bund.
Fördermittel vom Bund: 4,4 Millionen Euro
Der Haushaltsausschuss des Bundestags hat Anfang März mehr als 4,4 Millionen Euro für das Sanierungsprojekt im Spreepark bewilligt. Mit 1,44 Millionen Euro davon soll das Riesenrad restauriert und wieder fahrtüchtig gemacht werden. Ab 2024 sollen Besucher*innen dort wieder fahren können.
Weitere 3 Millionen Euro sind für die Sanierung der Werkhalle sowie für die erwähnte Umnutzung zum Kulturzentrum gedacht. Die Mittel stammen aus dem Bundesprogramm „Sanierung kommunaler Einrichtungen“. Das Projekt ist eines von vier Berliner Projekten, die von der Förderung profitieren.
Fertigstellung ist für 2026 geplant
Der zukünftige Park soll öffentlich zugänglich sein. Das übergeordnete Ziel der Projektplaner ist es, “die alten Fahrgeschäfte und Relikte der Vergangenheit zu transformieren, deren Nutzung neu zu denken und mit den Themen Kunst, Kultur und Natur harmonisch zu verbinden“.
Ab dem kommenden Jahr soll eine schrittweise Eröffnung des Parks erfolgen. Bis 2026 soll das Projekt vollständig abgeschlossen werden.

The amusement park opened in 1969 as “Kulturpark Plänterwald” and operated from 1989 to 2020 under the name “Spreepark Berlin” is to be converted into a cultural center.
The area has lain fallow since its closure in 2002, which is now 19 years. Nevertheless, it has remained a popular destination among Berliners and tourists. As one of several “Lost Places” in the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region, the abandoned and dilapidated site has now achieved international fame in its own right.
THE SITE HAS LAIN FALLOW FOR 19 YEARS
Now, however, the site is to be redeveloped. Anyone who expects the site to be used for sports and leisure activities or for much-needed housing is mistaken. The park will continue to exist in the future, but in a different form.
The overgrown and weathered park area is to become a cultural center. Some rides, such as the old Ferris wheel, are to be refurbished and given an artistic makeover. Other relics such as the Mero or the Werkhalle are to be transformed into venues for culture and art.
A NATURE AND CULTURAL CENTER IS TO BE DEVELOPED ON THE PARK SITE
The municipal company Grün Berlin GmbH is responsible for the development of the project. The company has been a partner company of the Berlin Senate for 25 years and implements climate-neutral park, infrastructure and urban space projects.
The “Spreepark” project is one of these projects. Under the motto “Art – Culture – Nature,” the area is to be redeveloped and modernized by 2026. Financial support for this is now coming from the federal government.
FUNDING FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT: 4.4 MILLION EUROS
At the beginning of March, the Bundestag’s Budget Committee approved more than 4.4 million euros for the Spreepark redevelopment project. Of this sum, 1.44 million euros will be used to restore the Ferris wheel and make it roadworthy again. Visitors should be able to ride it again from 2024.
Another 3 million euros are earmarked for the renovation of the workshop and the aforementioned conversion into a cultural center. The funds come from the federal program “Redevelopment of Municipal Facilities”. The project is one of four in Berlin to benefit from the funding.
COMPLETION PLANNED FOR 2026
The future park is to be open to the public. The overall goal of the project planners is to “transform the old rides and relics of the past, rethink their use and harmoniously combine them with the themes of art, culture and nature.”
Starting next year, a gradual opening of the park is planned. By 2026, the project should be fully completed.
