Daher setzen wir unsere Filmreihe ENTWICKLUNGSSTADT Mediathek, die in mehreren Teilen zwischen Weihnachten und Silvester in der Rubrik MEDIA veröffentlicht wird, mit der ARTE Dokumentation “Berlin baut ein Schloss” fort.
Teil 2: “Berlin baut ein Schloss” (2020)
Die Dokumentation begleitet die Geschichte der Schloss-Entstehung. Sie will verstehen, worauf diese Rekonstruktion Bezug nimmt und warum die Debatte über ihr Für und Wider so emotional geführt wurde und wird.
Bis das historische Schloss 1950 gesprengt wurde, war das Gebäude über 500 Jahre lang Herrschaftssitz der Hohenzollern. Von hier regierten Preußens Könige und zuletzt die Kaiser des Deutschen Reichs. Zu DDR-Zeiten entstand an seiner Stelle der Palast der Republik, der dann einige Jahre nach der Wende ebenfalls in Schutt gelegt wurde.

Nun ziert das neue Gebäude auf den historischen Grundmauern in Berlins neuer alter Mitte an drei Fronten die barocken Schlossfassaden und zeigt nur gen Osten ein modernes Gesicht, mit einer sachlich gestalteten Fassadenstruktur – und macht damit die Brüche seiner Geschichte deutlich.
Denn das Aufeinandertreffen von Alt und Neu repräsentiert nicht nur historische Rekonstruktion, sondern auch in Beton gegossene und in Stein gemeißelte deutsche Erinnerungskultur.
Die von Regisseur Norbert Bluse verantwortete Dokumentation begleitet die Protagonisten des Schloss-Wiederaufbaus über einen Zeitraum von rund sieben Jahren und beleuchtet das Thema aus unterschiedlichen, historischen und gesellschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten.

Therefore we continue our film series ENTWICKLUNGSSTADT Mediathek, which will be published in several parts between Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the MEDIA section, with the ARTE documentary “Berlin baut ein Schloss” (“Berlin builds a castle”).
PART 2: “BERLIN BUILDS A CASTLE” (2020).
The documentary follows the story of the castle’s development. It seeks to understand what this reconstruction refers to and why the debate about its pros and cons was and is so emotional.
Until the historic palace was blown up in 1950, the building was the seat of power of the Hohenzollern dynasty for over 500 years. Prussia’s kings and, most recently, the emperors of the German Empire ruled from here. In GDR times, the Palace of the Republic was built on its site, which was then also reduced to rubble a few years after reunification.
HUMBOLDT FORUM: MAKING BERLIN’S HISTORICAL FRACTURES VISIBLE
Now the new building on the historic foundation walls in Berlin’s new old center adorns the baroque palace facades on three fronts and only shows a modern face towards the east, with a matter-of-factly designed facade structure – and thus makes the breaks in its history clear.
For the clash of old and new represents not only historical reconstruction, but also German memory culture cast in concrete and carved in stone.
The documentary, directed by Norbert Bluse, accompanies the protagonists of the palace reconstruction over a period of about seven years and illuminates the topic from different historical and social points of view.
