During the holidays we want to inspire you with exciting and informative films about the development of Berlin and sweeten the – necessary – stay at home.

Therefore we continue our film series ENTWICKLUNGSSTADT Mediathek, which will be published in several parts between Christmas and New Year’s Eve in the MEDIA section, with the RBB documentary “Nächster Halt Hauptbahnhof – die U5 am Ziel” (“Next stop main station – the U5 at its destination”).

PART 3: “NEXT STOP MAIN STATION – THE U5 AT ITS DESTINATION” (2020)

Under Berlin’s most famous boulevard, “Unter den Linden,” drilling, digging and concreting went on for years. Almost two kilometers of track and three new stations are now connected to Berlin’s subway network. The Spree River also had to be crossed underground. But the noise, noise and dirt, the slalom driving in Mitte – it was all worth it.

Anyone getting off the long-distance train at the main station can now travel through to the outskirts of the city to Hönow in Brandenburg. In the future, many visitors to Berlin will be able to reach the Humboldt Forum quickly by taking the new subway line.

TUNNELING THE DIFFICULT BERLIN CONSTRUCTION SITE

At the new “Unter den Linden” station, passengers will be able to transfer more conveniently from the U6 to the main train station or Museum Island. From summer 2021, the “Museum Island” subway station, which is still under construction, will also be completed.

The authors of the film “Next stop Hauptbahnhof – die U5 am Ziel” , Thomas Balzer and Georg Berger, accompanied project managers and architects over several years during the construction of the complex tunnel, showing the problems in Berlin’s difficult building ground as well as the annoyance for local residents and the consequences for car traffic.
