Der große Sprung: Stadtschloss, U5 und BER eröffnen Ende 2020

ENGLISH VERSION: BELOW

While 2020 will probably not necessarily be remembered as the most positive in human history in global and historical memory, it brings with it three significant urban changes for the German capital.

Three important projects will come to an end at the end of the year and are changing Berlin’s infrastructure and cultural landscape in a sustainable way.

THREE MAJOR PROJECTS ARE COMPLETED ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY

While the almost no longer considered possible construction of the BER could actually be successfully completed on 31 October, the extended metro line 5 (“U5”) will be officially launched on Friday, 4 December, after a total of 22 years of planning and implementation. And last but not least, the partially reconstructed Berlin Castle (“Stadtschloss”) will be opened on 17 December as the Humboldt Forum, but Corona-conditionally only digitally, i.e. without visitors on site.

It seems a bit like a stair joke of history that these three projects, each of which involved decades of planning and highly complex implementation and completion processes, will now be completed and opened within six weeks.

BER, HUMBOLDT FORUM, U5: 2020 WILL BE THE YEAR

Already at the beginning of the year it was clear: if the opening plans of these three major projects – which were still strongly doubted at the time by the majority of the population of Berlin – are kept, then 2020 will bring about a major urban change.

This is how it has come, despite many inconveniences. The most difficult of these three projects was, of course, the construction of an airport just outside Berlin. Now, however, the new BER airport has been completed, and despite the eight-year delay and the sadness of some Tegel nostalgics: those who visit the new airport site will find a striking, modern and above all clearly structured airport construction, which quickly makes you forget the inadequacies of the long-lost airports in Tegel and Schönefeld.

ANIZED SPENDENSumme FOR THE HUMBOLDT FORUM HAS BEEN REACHED

The reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace had also been accompanied for years by pessimistic forecasts. The members of the foundation had to listen almost weekly to the fact that the required donation amount of 105 million euros, which was to be collected privately, could hardly be reached.

However, the foundation announced a few days ago that it had kept its commitment to the two builders – the federal government and the state of Berlin – who were also involved. The 105 million euros in donations were collected in full.

OPENING ONE YEAR LATER THAN PLANNED

Nevertheless, this construction was not free of problems. However, the increase in costs of 33 million euros and the opening of this century building, which was delayed by one year, cannot conceal the fact that an extraordinary building has been built in Berlin’s mitte, which completely redefines the historic centre and urban area around Lustgarten, Berlin Cathedral and Museum Island.

At the same time, the Humboldt Forum will become a new, internationally renowned cultural and tourist attraction and at the same time offers completely new, large-format opportunities to present art, culture and history for the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, which has come under criticism.

Upstairs “Schloss”, Downstairs “U-BAHN”: THE EXTENSION OF The U5

Almost at the same time as the castle construction, the infrastructural connection was made possible underground. While the castle reconstruction was completed above ground, the extension of the U5 was being pushed forward underground.

The extension of the underground line across Berlin’s inner city base is probably one of the most complex construction projects that have been implemented in Europe over the past ten years. The outstanding engineering work demonstrated in tunnelling and station construction ensured that the project could only be completed with minimal delays.

CONNECTION OF THE HAUPTBAHNHOF TO THE U-BAHNNETZ

It should also be mentioned here that due to the difficult building ground and delays due to groundwater intrusions, the completion of the Museum Island station will not take place until the summer of 2021. Until then, the U5 will pass through the station without stopping.

The resulting route, including new and very attractively designed metro stations, is much more than just a “tourist line”. It finally connects the main station to the underground network and one of the busiest underground lines in Berlin.

This will create numerous new, time-saving interchanges, such as at the Brandenburg Gate or the new Unter den Linden junction station, which will be one of the highlights of the new underground line.

So it wasn’t all bad, in this difficult year of 2020. In recent years, Berlin has had to suffer a lot of ridicule and teasing, especially for the ruinous construction of the BER. However, the realization of the Humboldt Forum and U5 extension projects has shown that the city can still implement construction projects that are highly complex and large-scale.

And these projects, despite their size, are only a small part of what is currently being planned and realized in Berlin. Despite all the inconveniences.
