Due to the continued enormous population growth in Berlin’s Pankow district, we have already reported frequently on housing and infrastructure projects in the north of Berlin.

Projects such as the development of the Pankower Tor area, the Ludwig Hoffmann Quarter in Buch and the housing offensive of the state-owned GESOBAU are just a few examples.

EXPANSION OF BLANKENburg TRAIN STATION TO EASE TRAFFIC CONGESTION

One of the capital’s largest housing projects is the development of the “Blankenburger Süden” area. Up to 6,000 new apartments are to be built here. And there are other projects in this area of the district that will gradually increase the number of residents.

Many thousands of people will therefore commute from the north of the capital to the city center in the future. To meet this infrastructural challenge, the state of Berlin is planning to extend an already existing S-Bahn station, namely Blankenburg station.

EXTENSION OF STREETCAR M2 TO BLANKENburg STATION BY 2028

The M2 streetcar line is to be extended to the S-Bahn station by 2028. The station itself is to be upgraded in the coming years, and it sorely needs it. Already today, around 12,000 passengers pass through the station every day; in the future, this figure is expected to rise to between 15,000 and 20,000. The Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing assumes this today.

To ensure that the station’s infrastructure can cope with this, major construction work will be carried out in the area surrounding the station in the coming years. Among other things, a new station entrance is to be created on the east side – in the direction of the “Blankenburger Süden” neighborhood mentioned above.

NEW “EAST ENTRANCE” TO BE CREATED

In front of the new “east entrance”, a combined streetcar and bus stop is to be created, at which the streetcars of line M2 can stop in the middle and buses on the outside. Today, this area is still occupied by a car dealership. In the future, according to the plan, a new station forecourt will be built there.

Construction work is to begin on the areas from 2023. The cost of the planned conversion work is estimated at 20 million euros. The project will be implemented jointly with Deutsche Bahn, which owns the land around the station.

NEW PARKING GARAGE FOR 1,900 BICYCLES

To relieve the already notoriously congested streets in this area, a bicycle parking garage for 1,900 bikes is also to be built.

The district’s infrastructure planning is thus pinning its hopes on public transportation and bicycles. Anything else would be incomprehensible. Meanwhile, it is to be hoped that the planned reconstruction work at the train station will be able to keep pace with the rapid increase in population.
