Die Diskussion um ein mögliches neues Fußballstadion für den Berliner Fußball-Bundesligisten Hertha BSC zieht sich bereits über einige Jahre hin. Allerdings hat es bislang wenig wirklich nennenswerte Erfolge für das Vorhaben von Hertha BSC gegeben.
Eine von Hertha-Fans aus Berlin und Brandenburg gegründete Initiative versucht seit über einem Jahr, die Entscheidungsträger in der Berliner Politik für das Thema zu sensibilisieren und einen Dialog zu ermöglichen.
Wir haben mit der Initiative Blau-Weißes Stadion, wie ihr offizieller Name ist, einmal über Ziele und Stand ihrer Aktivitäten gesprochen.
ENTWICKLUNGSSTADT: Zuerst einmal vielen Dank, dass ihr Euch die Zeit nehmt, uns Eure Initiative vorzustellen. Was wollt ihr damit ganz konkret erreichen?
Initiative Blau-Weißes Stadion: Das Minimalziel unserer Initiative war und ist die Intensivierung von Gesprächen zwischen der Berliner Politik – dem Senat und dem Bezirk Charlottenburg – und Hertha BSC. Wir wollen miteinander zum Thema „Ein eigenes Stadion für Hertha BSC“ reden und nicht, wie so oft in der Vergangenheit, übereinander. Dies ist dann auch schon, was wir konkret erreichen wollen: ein eigenes Stadion für unseren Verein innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen von Berlin – bevorzugt auf dem Olympiagelände.
Wie setzt sich eure Gruppe zusammen? Wie groß ist eure Bewegung? Und: Kann man mitmachen?
Wir alle sind Herthaner aus Berlin und Brandenburg. Wir gehen regelmäßig zu den Heimspielen; einige von uns sind auch auswärts dabei. Die Gruppe ist absichtlich nicht nur aus Leuten zusammengesetzt, die von Anfang an Feuer und Flamme für ein eigenes Stadion waren. Uns war es wichtig, auch die Argumente der Olympiastadion-Befürworter und Unentschlossenen von Anfang an in der Gruppe zu haben. Uns war es aber wichtig, wenn schon nicht alle, dann doch einen großen Querschnitt der Fanszene zu verkörpern und damit auch zu erreichen. Es gibt Mitglieder in unserer Initiative, die sind gefühlt seit dem ersten Bundesliga-Spiel von Hertha im Olympiastadion dabei, andere haben erst in den letzten 10 Jahren ihre Heimat bei Hertha gefunden.

Unsere Initiative besteht aus 15 Mitgliedern. Um effektiv arbeiten zu können und um die Entscheidungswege kurz zu halten, sollte der Kern nicht wesentlich größer sein. Was aber nicht bedeutet, dass wir nicht offen für alle Anregungen sind. Aktives Mitmachen wie bei einem Fanclub oder Ähnlichem kann man bei uns nicht. Wir sind kein Fanclub, sondern eine Initiative – wir organisieren uns im kleinen Kreis und vertreten die Interessen zahlreicher Herthaner.
Seit unser Gründung haben wir uns mit etlichen Politikern und Persönlichkeiten des Berliner Sports getroffen, unzählige Veranstaltungen besucht und Gespräche geführt; wir haben uns mit Standortanalysen, Machbarkeitsstudien und vielem mehr auseinandergesetzt – es wäre schwer, jemanden, der nicht im Thema steckt, hier abzuholen und aktiv einzubinden. Wir sind aber dankbar für jede andere Form der Unterstützung, zum Beispiel die Herstellung von Kontakten. Denn eines haben wir in den letzten Monaten gelernt – offene, konstruktive und reflektierte Gespräche auf Augenhöhe sind enorm wichtig.
Vorbild München? Auch hier wurde das Olympiastadion von einer reinen Fußballarena abgelöst. Diese wurde allerdings nicht innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen, sondern im Vorort Fröttmaning errichtet.
Wo steht ihr mit der Initiative heute? Was sind die nächsten Schritte, die geplant sind?
Sechszehn Monate nach Gründung unserer Initiative sind wir alle miteinander natürlich schlauer was Denkmalschutz, Lärmemissionen, Umweltauflagen, u. v. m. betrifft. Wie schon erwähnt, haben wir viele Gespräche geführt, vor allem mit Abgeordneten des Berliner Senats. Wir haben uns vernetzt, physische und digitale Gespräche geführt und Überzeugungsarbeit geleistet. Und es ist uns gelungen, die maßgeblichen Beteiligten aus Politik, Sport und Verein an einen Tisch zu holen. Beim ersten Runden Tisch ging es zunächst einmal um das Ausloten der einzelnen Positionen und einer eventuellen gemeinsamen Schnittmenge.
Der Runde Tisch ist zunächst die Voraussetzung, dass man eine Lösung für einen Standort innerhalb der Grenzen Berlins findet, und zwar den wirtschaftlich sinnvollsten Standort für ein eigenes Stadion. Im November geht es mit dem Runden Tisch weiter. Wir können heute noch nicht abschätzen, wie viele Treffen hierfür notwendig sind, aber wir sind Herthanerinnen und Herthaner und haben in den letzten 128 Jahren eines gelernt: am Ball zu bleiben.

Unser klarer Fokus liegt darauf, dieses Stadion zu ermöglichen und einen passenden Standort zu finden und zu realisieren. Dass wir uns aber dann nicht von einen Tag auf den anderen zurückziehen, sondern dieses Projekt natürlich weiter begleiten werden, ist auch klar.
Zwischenzeitlich war auch ein Umbau in ein reines Fußballstadion im Gespräch: Das unter Denkmalschutz stehende, von 2000 bis 2004 modernisierte Olympiastadion.
Wie empfindet ihr den bisherigen Austausch mit den Vertretern des Berliner Senats?
Aufgrund der vielen Gespräche haben wir natürlich neben Vertreter*innen der Senatsverwaltung für Sport etliche Politiker*innen des Abgeordnetenhauses und der Landespolitik gesprochen. Wir haben in den Gesprächen ihre Ansichten zum Thema Stadion gehört, hatten die Gelegenheit, mit Missverständnissen oder Unwissenheit aufzuräumen und auch die Gründe für den Wunsch nach einem eigenen Stadion zu erklären. Einige Vertreter haben uns überrascht, vor allem positiv, andere Gespräche waren nicht so konstruktiv. Aber, wie gesagt, wir bleiben dran und am Ball.
Nach eurer Einschätzung – wann wird Hertha in einem reinen Fußballstadion spielen?
Die Mitglieder unserer Initiative befinden sich in verschiedenen Lebensabschnitten. Und egal wie alt oder jung jeder einzelne von uns ist – wir alle hoffen, dass wir ein eigenes Stadion erleben werden. Nein, wir werden nicht auch den Fehler machen und mit der Nennung eines Datums Druck aufbauen. Wir sind alles in allem auf einem guten Weg.

Der Status Quo: Hertha-Fans im Berliner Olympiastadion (vor der Corona-Pandemie). Architektonisch ist die seit 1965 genutzte Arena beeindruckend, doch die Leichtathletik-Laufbahn ist vielen Stadionbesuchern ein Dorn im Auge.
The discussion about a possible new soccer stadium for the Berlin soccer Bundesliga club Hertha BSC has been dragging on for several years. However, there have been few really noteworthy successes for Hertha BSC’s project so far.
An initiative founded by Hertha fans from Berlin and Brandenburg has been trying for over a year to sensitize decision-makers in Berlin’s political arena to the issue and to facilitate a dialogue.
We once talked to the Blue and White Stadium Initiative, as its official name is, about the goals and status of its activities.
ENTWICKLUNGSSTADT: First of all, thank you for taking the time to present your initiative to us. What do you want to achieve in concrete terms?
Blue and White Stadium Initiative: The minimum goal of our initiative was and is to intensify talks between Berlin’s political leaders – the Senate and the district of Charlottenburg – and Hertha BSC. We want to talk to each other on the subject of “A stadium of our own for Hertha BSC” and not, as so often in the past, about each other. This is already what we want to achieve: a stadium of our own for our club within the city limits of Berlin – preferably on the Olympic grounds (“Olympiapark”).
What is the composition of your group? How big is your movement? And: Is it possible to participate?
We are all Hertha fans from Berlin and Brandenburg. We regularly go to the home games; some of us are also going to the away games. The group is intentionally not only made up of people who have been passionate about their own stadium right from the start. It was important for us to have the arguments of the Olympic stadium supporters and undecided people in the group from the very beginning. But it was important for us to embody, if not all of them, then at least a large cross-section of the fan scene and thus to reach them. There are members of our initiative who have been with us since Hertha’s first Bundesliga game in the Olympic Stadium, others have only found their home with Hertha in the last 10 years.

Our initiative consists of 15 members. In order to be able to work effectively and to keep decision-making processes short, the core should not be much larger. This does not mean, however, that we are not open to all suggestions. Active participation like in a fan club or similar is not possible with us. We are not a fan club, but an initiative – we organize ourselves in a small circle and represent the interests of numerous Herthans.
Since our founding, we have met with a number of politicians and personalities from Berlin’s sports scene, visited countless events and held discussions; we have dealt with location analyses, feasibility studies and much more – it would be hard to pick up and actively involve someone who is not involved in the topic. However, we are grateful for any other form of support, for example by establishing contacts. Because one thing we have learned in the last few months – open, constructive and reflective discussions at eye level are extremely important.
Where do you stand with the initiative today? What are the next steps that are planned?
Sixteen months after the founding of our initiative, we are all of course smarter together when it comes to monument protection, noise emissions, environmental regulations, and much more. As I mentioned earlier, we have had many discussions, especially with members of the Berlin Senate. We networked, had physical and digital conversations and did a lot of persuasion. And we have succeeded in bringing together the key players from politics, sports and clubs. At the first round table, the first thing we did was to sound out the individual positions and a possible common intersection.
The round table is first of all the prerequisite for finding a solution for a location within the borders of Berlin, namely the most economically sensible location for a stadium of one’s own. The Round Table will continue in November. We cannot yet estimate how many meetings will be necessary for this, but we are Hertha residents and have learned one thing over the past 128 years: to stay on the ball.

Our clear focus is on making this stadium possible and finding and realizing a suitable location. But it is also clear that we will not withdraw from one day to the next, but will of course continue to support this project.
How do you feel about the exchange with the representatives of the Berlin Senate so far?
Because of the many conversations we had, we talked to representatives of the Senate Department for Sports, as well as several politicians from the House of Representatives and state politics. During the conversations we heard their views on the subject of stadiums, had the opportunity to clear up misunderstandings or ignorance and also to explain the reasons for their desire for their own stadium. Some representatives surprised us, especially in a positive way, other discussions were not so constructive. But, as I said, we are staying on and on the ball.
In your estimation – when will Hertha play in a pure soccer stadium?
The members of our initiative are at different stages of their lives. And no matter how old or young each one of us is – we all hope that we will experience a stadium of our own. No, we won’t make the mistake of putting pressure on them by naming a date. All in all, we are on a good path.
